Mesa Style
Faculty Exhibition 2010

February 4 – March 3, Art Gallery D101

Reception in the Gallery Courtyard: Wednesday, February 10, 4:30 - 7:00 pm

Every two years, the San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery presents artwork produced by members of the Fine Art faculty. This mini-biennial is an ideal way for our students and larger arts community to become familiarized with the outstanding talent in our program. The artwork varies in both content and media, and holds exciting surprises. Below is information about some of the artwork in the exhibition and recent accomplishments of our professors.

For the current exhibit, Leah Younker’s urban landscapes, a sensitive portrait by Misty Hawkins, and vibrant abstractions by Lynn Engstrom, Georgia Laris, Juan Carlos Toth and Randall Christpher will grace the walls of the gallery. Amy Paul’s art will examine the fracturing of her life as she fulfills a multiplicity of roles, while Emiko and Robert Sanchez will again team up with a proto-scientific installation. Barbara Sexton plays with arithmetical symbols while Sandra Wascher uses language in spiraling hanging sculptures. Asian inspired ceramics by Patricia Yockey, whimsical clocks by Kraig Cavanaugh, intaglio prints and collage by Jim Machacek will awe with their elegance and beauty. Kaleidoscopic photographic compositions by Christopher Ferreria and poetic clay armor by Linda Litteral, seen above, are just some of the works. The variety of approaches to art making will inspire and delight. To find out more about Mesa College’s Fine Art Department visit www.sdmesa.edu/art/.

Last year Barbara Sexton was included in Quint Gallery’s survey of San Diego’s top tier contemporary artists, HOMING IN: An Exhibition of 50 San Diego artists; Brian Dick was awarded the San Diego Art Prize in 2008 and created a playful mattress room for the inaugural exhibition at the New Children’s Museum; Wendell Kling had a solo exhibition at the La Jolla Atheneum and Leah Younker exhibited her El Cajon paintings during South Park Nights in October 09. Mario Lara with Nina Karavasiles and Dr. Gerda Govine-Ituarte, were selected to design public art for our campus, their bus stop and reflection garden in honor of Rosa Parks with a grand opening on February 25, 2010.

Our instructors were also busy abroad: Younker, Angel Adame, Misty Hawkins and Kraig Cavanaugh participated in Trade Show that traveled to LA and Istanbul. Last September Linda Litteral studied mold making at the foundry of Hungarian sculptor Albert Gyorgy near Lausanne, Switzerland. Robert Sanchez and Emiko Lewis-Sanchez presented their collaborative work at Voz Alta and just returned from a performance at the University of Memphis.

From endearment to anger the body expresses it all!

The San Diego Mesa College Museum Studies class invites you to an exhibition of artwork featuring the human form. From the Discobolus of Classical Greece, to Leonardo Da Vinci’s anatomical studies and Matisse’s dancing figures, the human body has been a rich source of artistic inspiration. San Diego artists come together with striking artwork in various media that deals with the beauty, strength and passions of the body.

Artworks range from mysterious wrapped figures by Anna Stump, lyrical floating bodies by Misty Hawkins, figurative abstractions by Jeff Clark, and a Houdini-like escape performance by Autumn Hays. Other artists included are Francois Michel Beausoleil, Adrian Collins, Sheena Dowling, Jeanne Dunn, Daphne Hill, Julie Kitterman, David Krimmel, John Rankin and Michaela Simmons. The exhibit was curated and organized by Maria Bolivar, Megan Daly, James Johnson, Kevin Kao and Samantha Nessel.

On Friday, December 4 the public is invited to enjoy Friday Night Liberty at NTC Promenade, the Arts and Cultural District at Roosevelt and Dewey Roads, in the heart of Liberty Station. Friday Night Liberty is a free monthly first-Friday event, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring open artist studios, galleries, shopping and entertainment throughout NTC Promenade.
