In Spanish, deber means duty or responsibility… For DEBER, our responsibility is to
serve our community.
What does it mean to be a DEBER Scholar?
DEBER Scholars self-identify as Latinx/Chicanx/Hispanic and have a desire to teach,
inspire and change future students’ lives. As a community of scholars, they work together
with professors and counselors on their career paths to becoming bilingual (Spanish/English)
educators.
What are the requisites to be part of DEBER?
If you imagine a career in teaching bilingual education, consider these points:
Identify as Latinx/Chicanx/Hispanic
Show interest in teaching bilingual education
Transfer to San Diego State University (SDSU) as one of your options
Major in Teacher Education, as one of your options
Be billingual (Spanish/English)
